A vintage and extraoridinary rare 1935-36 fund raising calendar sold for the
benefit of Dr. Sir Wilfred Grenfell's Labrador mission work.
The front includes a mounted color print of Dr. Grenfell with his beloved sled
dogs followed by the caption "The Good Companions". The 6 1/4" x 8" print, with
raised ridges simulating brush strokes, is mounted on a 7 1/2" x 10" forest
green card stock. The calendar is filled with reproductions of candid
photographs from the island's coastline, mission work and quotes taken from his
many writings.
Dr. Grenfell (1865-1940), a British missionary, was a surgeon on a hospital
ship that served the North Sea fisheries and was a member of the Mission to
Deep Sea Fishermen. In 1892, he went to Labrador, founding hospitals,
orphanages and other social services as well as fitting hospital ships for the
fishing grounds. Sir Wilfred Grenfell College (recently renamed Grenfell
Campus, Memorial University) is named in his honour.
In very good, unused condition with both the original hanging ribbon and
standing board to the rear. There is a small dent near the lower left bottom
edge of both covers. Additionally, the bound calendar sheets is missing one
brass rivet and has detached from the rear cover.
This calendar is extremely rare and a must have for the true Grenfell
collector.
