Thomas Ricketts was born in Middle Arm, White Bay, Newfoundland in 1901. In 1915, at the age of 15, he enlisted with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment by lying about his age. In 1917 he was sent to France and was wounded at Cambrai. Ricketts returned to action in 1918 and won the Victoria Cross later that year at Ledeghem, Belgium, for "bravery and devotion of duty" when an Allied attack was temporarily held up by heavy hostile fire. Thomas was promoted to Sergeant on 29th January 1919, and returned to Newfoundland shortly after. Thomas settled in St. John’s and returned to school. Around 1935 he opened a pharmacy at 100 Water Street West. By the early 1940s Ricketts was listed at 516 Water Street, where he remained until his death in 1967.
