Do you remember when we used to make stuff in Canada? I do, but barely.
Of course, there are still a few things that are made here, but the days of
consumer goods sporting a "Made in Canada" label are mostly gone. And the few
footwear manufacturers still producing in this country tend to be very high-end
custom-order outfits like Viberg and Dayton.
Well, here's an opportunity to slip into a very nice pair of vintage Jarman
Benchmark Apron Loafers for less than a pair of Chinese shoes from the Avalon
Mall. These elegant shoes feature a leather sole and a half-leather lining
along with a cushion tread rubber heel.
These sold for north of $200 before taxes back-in-the-day. Put 'em on your
feet for under a C-note!
OR put them on the feet of a loved one: these would make an AWESOME Father's
Day gift!

On offer are these excellent Canadian-made dress shoes in smooth full grain
calf leather. They were made in Winnipeg by Canada West and intended as service
shoes for the Canadian military.
But the cap-toe Oxford is the single most important style of shoe a man can
own. If you own but one pair of decent shoes, make it a black cap-toe Oxford as
they can be worn – correctly – with anything from a suit to jeans.
These shoes feature the desired Goodyear-welt construction, quality rubber
Vibram Gumlite outsoles, and they are ½ leather lined with a leather tongue
lining.
Because these shoes are F-width (that is, EE). they will likely fit anyone
from 11E to 12D.
This model retails for just over $200. Save yourself over 65% and grab these
instead!

This lovely pair of Hartt “Gold Bond” Derbies in 8.5D is now up for grabs!
They feature full-grain calf, full-leather linings, Goodyear-welted
double-leather soles, nailed Biltrite rubber heels, and new laces. Outers,
inners and soles are all in excellent, almost-new condition. These shoes have
recently been professionally cleaned, conditioned and polished.
Hartt, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, was one of the great names in Canadian
shoemaking. The Hartt Boot and Shoe Company Ltd. was founded in 1898. The
company was eventually acquired by the A.H. Marston Corp. (who already
controlled the famous Dack’s brand) in 1957 or 1958.
The decision was soon made to move all production for both brands to the Hartt
factory, so all Canadian Dack’s or Hartt shoes were henceforth produced in that
same factory. The two brands were very similar and offered many identical
products. The Dack’s brand was sold via the company’s own stores in major
centres and at Eaton’s, while the Hartt name was offered at Simpson’s and also
marketed by way of smaller, independent shoe stores throughout the country.
Sadly, as in so many other industries, Canadian production stopped altogether
in 1999.
Buy these excellent Canadian-made shoes for the bargain price of $75, instead
of a crappy pair of Chinese shoes from the mall for twice as much!

Dack’s was THE brand of men’s shoes in Canada for many decades. Founded in
York, Ontario in 1834 months before the city changed its name to Toronto, they
offered both Canadian-made shoes of the highest quality, along with Church or
Cheaney shoes from England.
One of the other great names in Canadian shoemaking was Hartt, of Fredericton,
New Brunswick. The Hartt Boot and Shoe Company Ltd. was founded in 1898 and was
eventually acquired by Dack’s in 1957. Dack’s soon made the decision to move
all production for both brands to the Hartt factory, so all Canadian Dack’s or
Hartt shoes were produced in that same factory.
Sadly, as in so many other industries, Canadian production stopped altogether
in 1999. The company offered very nice English-made shoes until 2009 when,
after 175 years, the business was closed.
In 2012, the Dack’s name was re-launched as Matthew Dack, but all sales are
online and all production in England. Meanwhile, the Hartt label is also back –
with current production in Spain - but the companies are no longer connected.
On offer is this wonderful pair of Dack's Black Water Bison Derbies in size 9F.
They were hand-crafted in the Hartt factory in Fredericton and are from the
"Custom Grade" line - one of the highest-quality lines that Dack's offered.
These shoes would have sold for $400 or more. They feature imported Water
Bison, a half-leather lining, leather insoles, leather outsoles, and nailed
rubber heels. They are constructed using the Goodyear-welt process (the way a
quality shoe is made) that permits repairs.
If you buy these, not only will you have a handmade pair of bench-crafted
shoes of bespoke quality, you will literally be wearing Canadian history. If
you take good care of them, you can wear these shoes for the rest of your life
and will them to your son.
OR you could take your $90, go to the mall and pay much more for a crappy pair
of Chinese shoes.
Shoe trees are NOT included!

These classic Florsheim Plain-Toe Bluchers in Black are now available. This is
a vintage Canadian-made 77513 model in a hard-to-find 11.5E. The shoes are in
excellent, near-new condition and look better in person than in the overexposed
photos attached.
Some history: Florsheim is one of the best-known shoemakers in the world, with
a history dating back to 1892. At some time in the late 1950s (1959, I
believe), the company that then controlled Florsheim also acquired the greatest
of ALL the Canadian shoemakers - the John McHale Company of London, ON - and
the McHale plant subsequently began producing the Canadian Florsheim products
too. I've never been able to find out exactly when Florsheim closed this plant
and ceased Canadian production, but I'd guess it was the 1980s or 1990s.
These bluchers feature the desired Goodyear-welting of quality footwear, thick
double-leather soles, beautiful, smooth exteriors, half-leather-lined insoles
and padding under the tongue.
Grab these high-quality Canadian shoes for less than some crappy pair of
Chinese-made shoes from the Avalon Mall!

These outstanding Frye 8R Harness Boots in size 11.5M are for sale! They are
brand new and are an attractive red-brown hue that Frye calls Redwood.
These high-end boots originally sold for $500 before taxes, but could be found
as low as $320 at one point, or $368 after taxes.
Save yourself over half and grab these for $175!
From the Manufacturer:
Even with its low rider height, nothing says American Craftsmanship like the
Harness 8R. Inspired by the Civil War cavalry, this is American craftsmanship
at its best. Oiled vintage leather is hand-burnished and distressed for that
broken-in look that gets better with age. Unlined with rugged rubber bottoms,
it needs a certain type to make this boot his own. Made in USA and sourced from
domestic and imported products.

- Goodyear welt construction

Sadly, there are no longer any Canadian manufacturers of high-end men’s shoes
in business. Gone are John McHale, Hartt, Dack’s and a handful of lesser
makers. And the USA has only two such survivors: Allen Edmonds and Alden.
Available now is this lovely pair of Allen Edmonds "Westchester" model in
Black Calf. They’re a classic Penny-loafer design, with full leather linings
and a Goodyear-welted oak leather sole. A rubber Topy has been professionally
applied to the sole to help protect the sole and add more traction in our wet
and slippery city!
The shoes are in excellent condition with slight damage – salt? – to the toe
of the right shoe. The flaw is barely visible thanks to the black colour.
These shoes sold for US$345 (C$457.72). Put ‘em on your feet for about 17.5%
of new!
