Dack’s was THE brand of men’s shoes in Canada for many decades. Founded in York, Ontario in 1834 months before the city changed its name to Toronto, they offered both Canadian-made shoes of the highest quality, along with Church or Cheaney shoes from England. One of the other great names in Canadian shoemaking was Hartt, of Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Hartt Boot and Shoe Company Ltd. was founded in 1898. The decision was soon made to move all production for both brands to the Hartt factory, so all Canadian Dack’s or Hartt shoes were henceforth produced in that same factory. In 1964, A.H. Marston Corp. sold both companies to Church’s English Shoes of Northampton. Church’s also acquired their English competitor Joseph Cheaney & Sons (also of Northampton) in 1964 and Cheaney manufactured for both Dack’s “Bond Street” line and Hartt’s “Gold Bond” line of top-tier shoes. Sadly, as in so many other industries, Canadian production stopped altogether in 1999. The company offered very nice Cheaney English-made shoes until 2009 when, after 175 years, the business was closed. These loafers are from this period. On offer is a beautiful pair of Dack’s Perry Tassel Loafers in English size 10.5F. This translates to a US/Can size of 11D (or Euro 44.5-45). The shoes were hand-benched by Cheaney in England in 2006 from the highest quality full grain calf leather and listed for C$578. The shoes currently sell at C$378 (or C$435 after taxes). This pair is in excellent, near-new condition and has been thoroughly cleaned, conditioned and polished. The loafers are fully leather-lined with leather insoles. Treat yourself to a world-class pair of shoes for 70% less than buying new! Shoe trees are NOT included!
