Do you remember when we used to make stuff in Canada? I do, but barely. Of course, there are still a few things that are made here, but the days of consumer goods sporting a "Made in Canada" label are mostly gone. And the few footwear manufacturers still producing in this country tend to be very high-end custom-order outfits like Viberg and Dayton. Well, here's an opportunity to slip into a very nice pair of vintage Jarman Benchmark Apron Loafers for less than a pair of Chinese shoes from the Avalon Mall. These elegant shoes feature a leather sole and a half-leather lining along with a cushion tread rubber heel. These sold for north of $200 before taxes back-in-the-day. Put 'em on your feet for under a C-note! OR put them on the feet of a loved one: these would make an AWESOME Father's Day gift!

Here’s an opportunity you will likely never see locally again… Perhaps the greatest of all the vintage Canadian shoemakers was the John McHale company of London, Ontario. At their peak, the McHale shoe was the equal of anything made anywhere in the world and the products from the 1940s-50s are much-sought by collectors everywhere. The company was acquired in the mid-1950s by the same parent that controlled the venerable Florsheim brand and production continued at a very high level until the end of the 1950s. At that point, the quality declined from the absolute peak, but was still a hand-made, high-end shoe made right here in Canada. By the 1970s, Canada could no longer competes with low-cost production from overseas and literally hundreds of Canadian companies were no more. This very nice pair of McHale 61206 Black Plain Toe Derbies are available in excellent condition in the hard-to-find size 11.5E. They were produced in the 1960s to early 1970s. They have been fully cleaned, conditioned and polished and are good to go! These will also likely fit someone who wears a 12D too. Slip them on your feet for less than a crappy pair of shoes from the mall and be impossibly hip! Shoe trees NOT included. The price is firm and if you see this ad, the shoes are still available...

On offer are these excellent Canadian-made dress shoes in smooth full grain calf leather. They were made in Winnipeg by Canada West and intended as service shoes for the Canadian military. But the cap-toe Oxford is the single most important style of shoe a man can own. If you own but one pair of decent shoes, make it a black cap-toe Oxford as they can be worn – correctly – with anything from a suit to jeans. These shoes feature the desired Goodyear-welt construction, quality rubber Vibram Gumlite outsoles, and they are ½ leather lined with a leather tongue lining. Because these shoes are F-width (that is, EE). they will likely fit anyone from 11E to 12D. This model retails for just over $200. Save yourself over 65% and grab these instead! **Shoe tress are NOT included!**

Dack’s was THE brand of men’s shoes in Canada for many decades. Founded in York, Ontario in 1834 months before the city changed its name to Toronto, they offered both Canadian-made shoes of the highest quality, along with Church or Cheaney shoes from England. One of the other great names in Canadian shoemaking was Hartt, of Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Hartt Boot and Shoe Company Ltd. was founded in 1898 and was eventually acquired by Dack’s in 1957. Dack’s soon made the decision to move all production for both brands to the Hartt factory, so all Canadian Dack’s or Hartt shoes were produced in that same factory. Sadly, as in so many other industries, Canadian production stopped altogether in 1999. The company offered very nice English-made shoes until 2009 when, after 175 years, the business was closed. In 2012, the Dack’s name was re-launched as Matthew Dack, but all sales are online and all production in England. Meanwhile, the Hartt label is also back – with current production in Spain - but the companies are no longer connected. On offer is this wonderful pair of Dack's Black Side-Gusset Loafers in size 10E. They were hand-crafted in the Hartt factory in Fredericton and are from the "Custom Grade" line - one of the highest-quality lines that Dack's offered. These shoes would have sold for $400 or more. They feature imported full-grain calf (with a hand-waxed finish), a half-leather lining, leather insoles, leather outsoles, and nailed rubber heels. They are absolutely pristine and come with their original shoe trees to keep them looking new. If these were 11.5E or 12D, they would be on my feet and not offered for yours! If you buy these, not only will you have a handmade pair of bench-crafted shoes of bespoke quality, you will literally be wearing Canadian history. If you take good care of them, you can wear these shoes for the rest of your life and will them to your son. These would make an AWESOME gift!

This lovely pair of Hartt “Gold Bond” Derbies in 8.5D is now up for grabs! They feature full-grain calf, full-leather linings, Goodyear-welted double-leather soles, nailed Biltrite rubber heels, and new laces. Outers, inners and soles are all in excellent, almost-new condition. These shoes have recently been professionally cleaned, conditioned and polished. Hartt, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, was one of the great names in Canadian shoemaking. The Hartt Boot and Shoe Company Ltd. was founded in 1898. The company was eventually acquired by the A.H. Marston Corp. (who already controlled the famous Dack’s brand) in 1957 or 1958. The decision was soon made to move all production for both brands to the Hartt factory, so all Canadian Dack’s or Hartt shoes were henceforth produced in that same factory. The two brands were very similar and offered many identical products. The Dack’s brand was sold via the company’s own stores in major centres and at Eaton’s, while the Hartt name was offered at Simpson’s and also marketed by way of smaller, independent shoe stores throughout the country. Sadly, as in so many other industries, Canadian production stopped altogether in 1999. Buy these excellent Canadian-made shoes for the bargain price of $75, instead of a crappy pair of Chinese shoes from the mall for twice as much! Shoe trees NOT included. The price is firm and if you see this ad, the shoes are still available...

IF YOU SEE THIS AD, THE SHOES ARE AVAILABLE AND THE PRICE IS FIRM. Up for grabs is a gorgeous pair of vintage USA-made Walk-Over Longwing Bluchers in Size 7.5 EEE/E. Do you have small, but wide feet? These beauties are made for you! They will very likely fit an 8D or 8.5C too. Although no longer in business, Walk-Over was in the shoe-making business for a long time and even made shoes for other companies like Cole Haan and L.L. Bean - especially high-end Bucks and Saddle shoes. My best guess is these particular shoes were produced in the late 1960s or early 1970s. They feature a nice calf leather with fine detail and the desired Goodyear-storm-welted double leather soles, and are fully leather-lined. They have been fully and thoroughly cleaned, the leather conditioned and then given a nice buffing polish. There is very little wear and they look awesome! NOTE! An identical new old stock pair of this very same model just sold two weeks ago on the Classic Shoes For Men website (classicshoesformen.com) that caters to collectors and aficionados for €460! That's C$670. Obviously, these shoes are infinitely better than anything you can buy at the mall (which are probably made in China anyway), so do yourself a favour and put these classy shoes on your feet for a fraction of the price. The shoe trees are NOT included.
